I am sure many of you have received passwords and sensitive files from friends, family, co-workers, and customers via e-mail, text messages, and a million other popular forms of communication in the past. This goes without to say that it’s an extremely horrible idea as data in plain text are very much susceptible to prying eyes looking to make you their next victim. Cloud-based messaging services like whatsapp, messenger, and such are also not as safe as most people think even if the app says your messages are “encrypted”. This is where applying encryption offline comes and saves the day.
However, encryption has been two things for almost as long as it existed:
- Too complicated to understand or setup for the non-technical
- Too troublesome for technical folks or lacking user friendliness in practice
